Sustainability management software · read against each standard
Sustainability management software
Sustainability management software runs the year behind a sustainability report: management systems, targets, actions, suppliers and evidence.
This page reads that job against each standard a UK company is likely to manage to, and states its status exactly: law, comply or explain, or voluntary.
It ranks nothing and has tested no product.
The job
What sustainability management software manages, standard by standard
Five management jobs, each anchored to a different standard or rule.
Module 01 / 04
Environmental management
ISO 14001:2026 aspects, legal register, objectives and internal audits.
Module 02 / 04
Energy management
ISO 50001 energy review, significant energy uses, indicators and baselines.
Module 03 / 04
Carbon
A Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory under the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard.
Module 04 / 04
Targets and suppliers
Targets, actions, owners and supplier evidence.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
Management software is judged on the year, not the report: who owns each action, what changed, and whether the evidence is still current.
ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026 and the 2015 edition is withdrawn, so templates should follow the 2026 text (ISO).
ISO 50001 requires continual energy performance improvement without setting the level to be achieved (ISO).
Status, stated exactly
Which of these standards are law, and which are voluntary?
Only some of what sustainability management software tracks is a legal duty.
Module 01 / 04
ESOS: law
Phase 4 compliance by an ESOS energy audit or ISO 50001 only.
Module 02 / 04
SECR: law
For unquoted companies above two of £36m turnover, £18m balance sheet and 250 employees.
Module 03 / 04
UK SRS: comply or explain
For listed companies in UKLR 6, 14, 15, 16 and 22, periods from 1 January 2027.
Module 04 / 04
ISO 14001 and 50001: voluntary
Certification of the organisation’s system, never of software.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
ESOS Phase 4 has two compliance routes, an ESOS energy audit or ISO 50001; Display Energy Certificates and Green Deal Assessments were removed (SI 2026/701).
SECR reaches an unquoted company only when it exceeds two of £36m turnover, £18m balance sheet and 250 employees (SI 2008/410 Sch 7 ¶20B).
Under the FCA’s final rules, listed companies in UKLR 6, 14, 15, 16 and 22 report against UK SRS on a comply-or-explain basis for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027 (FCA PS26/19).
Who certifies what
Is any sustainability management software certified?
No standard here certifies software; a few owners list partners for their own framework.
Module 01 / 04
ISO
Certification bodies certify an organisation’s management system.
Module 02 / 04
GHG Protocol
The Built on GHG Protocol review service is closed until further notice.
Module 03 / 04
GRI
Licenses software that uses GRI content; a licence is not report compliance.
Module 04 / 04
CDP
Lists accredited solutions providers for CDP disclosure only.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
ISO 50001 certification bodies audit to ISO 50003 and are accredited by UKAS; the software is not certified (UKAS).
The GHG Protocol’s Built on GHG Protocol review service is closed until further notice (GHG Protocol).
GRI runs a licensing programme for software and CDP lists accredited solutions providers, each for its own framework only (GRI; CDP).
Claims
Why management software has to keep supplier evidence
Green-claim liability can run along the supply chain, so the evidence has to travel with the claim.
Module 01 / 04
Supply-chain liability
The CMA says liability can run along the whole chain.
Module 02 / 04
Innocent breach
Still a breach in civil enforcement.
Module 03 / 04
Due diligence
Not a defence, in the CMA’s view.
Module 04 / 04
What to keep
Each supplier claim with its evidence and date.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
The CMA says liability for a green claim runs along the whole supply chain, and due diligence is not a defence (CMA).
A management tool that publishes or repeats supplier claims should therefore store the supplier’s evidence with each one.
One dataset
Feeding SECR, ESOS and UK SRS from one management record
The saving comes from producing several outputs from one record, not from features.
Module 01 / 04
Energy
UK kWh for SECR and the ESOS assessment.
Module 02 / 04
Emissions
Gross Scope 1, 2 and 3 for UK SRS S2.
Module 03 / 04
Method
The DESNZ factor set named for each year.
Module 04 / 04
Evidence
Source records kept with each figure.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
SECR asks for UK energy use as well as emissions, so the record has to hold kWh, not only tonnes (SI 2008/410 Sch 7 Part 7A).
UK SRS S2 asks for gross Scope 1, 2 and 3 measured under the 2004 GHG Protocol Corporate Standard (UK SRS S2 ¶29(a)).
UK reports close on the DESNZ conversion factors for the reporting year (DESNZ 2026).
Questions buyers ask
Best sustainability management software: is there a fair answer?
No neutral ranking exists, so a fair comparison runs your own data through each tool.

This site does not rank vendors or rate their support, because no repeatable test of either is published.
Enterprise sustainability management software earns its price only if it reduces the work of the duties you actually have.

Frequently asked
Questions people ask
What is sustainability management software?
Software that runs the work behind a sustainability programme between reports: environmental and energy management systems, targets and actions, supplier data and evidence.
How is it different from sustainability reporting software?
Reporting software produces a disclosure for a period; management software runs the year that the disclosure describes.
Many products do both.
Is sustainability management software certified to ISO 14001?
No. ISO 14001 certification is issued by a certification body to an organisation’s management system, never to software.
Which UK duties should it support?
Commonly ESOS, SECR and, for listed companies, UK SRS on a comply-or-explain basis from 2027.
What is the best sustainability management software?
There is no neutral ranking.

Prepare the evidence
Sustainability management software: from a requirement to a reporting pack
Use this preparation sequence alongside the detailed requirements on this page.
An editorial workflow, not a statutory schedule.
- Stage 0101
Reporting specification
Write the reporting boundaries and required outputs before evaluating a platform.
- Stage 0202
Evidence sample
Ask the vendor to demonstrate a representative import and calculation.
- Stage 0303
Method control
Inspect factor versions, estimates, permissions and change history.
- Stage 0404
Reporting export
Test the export against the required disclosures and existing reporting systems.
- Stage 0505
Review trail
Check whether a reviewer can follow a result back to its source record.
- Stage 0606
Commercial record
Record only the features, scope and prices the vendor actually commits to.

A practical brief
An evidence pack, with a clear review trail
Ask for a pack that lets the next reviewer retrace the scope decision, follow the evidence and understand the limitations.
This describes a useful handover; it does not certify compliance or establish that a vendor or adviser delivers it.
Module 01 / 04
Applicability record
Write down the entity, reporting route and relevant period, including why the route applies.
Module 02 / 04
Evidence register
Attach each reported figure or statement to its source, method, version and limitations.
Module 03 / 04
Review trail
Name the preparer, reviewer, open questions and decisions taken before publication.
Module 04 / 04
Usable handover
Retain the working files and unresolved actions so the next reporting cycle can reuse the evidence.

- Challenge02
Resolve questions before publication

- Retain03
