ESG Ratings

An ESG rating is meaningful only when its method, assessed object, date and purpose are understood, because different rating systems are not interchangeable measures (MSCI methodology; Sustainalytics methodology).

What question does an ESG rating answer?

A rating’s own methodology defines the assessment, so the label ESG does not establish one universal measure of sustainability industry-relative rating unmanaged-risk assessment.

Purpose

Identify the intended decision.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

Our fictional case follows Alderwick Investment Office, whose analyst receives two differently framed ESG assessments for a company under review.

The investment committee asks whether the apparent disagreement is an error, a timing difference or a consequence of the methods answering different questions.

The analyst starts with the original provider descriptions rather than averaging the outputs or copying the most favourable description into a board paper.

The standards homepage distinguishes ratings from reporting standards, while the ESG standards guide explains how a reporting basis and claim should be identified.

No real company rating or invented numerical score is assigned in this fictional teaching case.

What should the analyst request first?

Establish the decision, assessed object, method and timing before interpreting a result.

The analyst needs the original assessment metadata before deciding whether a comparison is meaningful.

Alderwick’s review starts by identifying missing metadata, not by deciding which provider is right.

The analyst can then explain whether a meaningful comparison is possible at all.

Why can score direction differ?

MSCI describes an industry-relative letter rating, while Sustainalytics describes unmanaged ESG risk with lower scores representing less unmanaged risk MSCI basis risk-rating basis.

Relative

Identify the peer comparison.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

MSCI’s public description places companies relative to industry peers on its letter scale rather than presenting an absolute cross-industry impact score industry-relative assessment.

Sustainalytics describes its ESG Risk Ratings through unmanaged risk, so reading a higher number as automatically better reverses the intended interpretation unmanaged risk and score direction.

Alderwick therefore keeps the two outputs in separately labelled columns and writes a plain-language explanation of the different questions.

The analyst does not create an exchange table converting one provider’s letter into the other provider’s number.

This source-based distinction is more useful than claiming that every rating disagreement demonstrates poor data quality.

How should two methods be compared?

Compare measurement purpose and scale direction without inventing an exchange rate between methods.

Separate interpretations can explain a disagreement that an averaged score would conceal.

The fictional comparison describes the methods without assigning either rating to a named issuer.

The committee receives the reason for the difference rather than an invented composite score.

How do scope and methodology limit interpretation?

The assessed item and published method remain essential even when outputs use similar sustainability language company rating method GRESB methodology disclosures.

Entity

Check the exact assessed object.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

Alderwick finds that one document refers to a company-level assessment while another file concerns a property investment assessment, making a direct comparison inappropriate.

GRESB’s methodology disclosures describe its assessment basis and should be read in their own context rather than converted into an MSCI or Sustainalytics equivalent methodology disclosure.

The analyst records whether the evidence concerns a company, fund, asset portfolio or particular assessment response before writing a conclusion.

The GRESB assessment guide owns the scheme-specific workflow, while EcoVadis assessment owns its respondent task.

This general guide concerns interpretation and selection, not a competing summary of every provider questionnaire.

Which scope mismatches should stop a comparison?

Check entity, assessed object, timing and method for mismatches that prevent a direct comparison.

An excluded assessment should have a reasoned explanation rather than disappearing from the review.
DecisionEvidence to examineUseful review question

Alderwick’s analyst flags the property-assessment file as relevant background but excludes it from the company-method comparison.

The review explains the exclusion rather than silently dropping an inconvenient result.

What is the UK regulatory position?

Instrument

Read the made legal text.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The UK ESG Ratings Order is made law with substantive commencement on 29 June 2028, rather than a statement that the future regime already applies in full Article 2.

The FCA status page and consultation explain the proposed approach, with the source status requiring a current check before a buyer repeats a regulatory claim consultation status proposed rules.

The explanatory memorandum helps readers understand the investment-use perimeter, while the operative wording remains in the Order explanatory memorandum regulated activity.

Alderwick’s procurement paper therefore separates a provider’s current evidence from an expectation about future authorisation.

The buyer does not assume that a rating used in procurement is automatically inside or outside the perimeter solely because of that label.

What should a UK status note distinguish?

Distinguish made law, commencement, proposed rules and evidence of a provider’s status.

A future regulatory expectation should not become an unsupported statement of current authorisation.

The fictional committee receives the exact source type beside the conclusion.

That makes an outdated consultation summary easier to identify before it is reused in procurement.

Why are EU notification and authorisation different?

The EU regulation and ESMA’s Article 51 list must be read together; a notification listing is not an authorisation decision EU regime notification list.

Module 01 / 04

Regime

Identify the relevant jurisdiction.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The EU ESG Ratings Regulation defines its scope and rating-provider framework separately from the UK’s later substantive commencement EU regulation UK commencement.

EcoVadis’s own regulatory page describes its notification and application intentions, which are statements about its own position rather than an independent authorisation finding owner regulatory statement.

The ESMA document used here is expressly a list of firms that notified under Article 51, so the analyst does not relabel it an approved-provider list document title and status.

Alderwick asks a prospective data supplier to provide the actual source supporting any current authorisation claim and records the date of the check.

This example does not infer a regulatory conclusion for another provider from its absence in a particular notification document.

Which status evidence should be kept separate?

Keep the owner statement, notification entry, legal framework and authorisation evidence separate.

The title and function of a regulator document determine what claim it can actually support.
DecisionEvidence to examineUseful review question

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The fictional reviewer retains the original document title so that the evidence cannot acquire a stronger meaning in a later slide deck.

Notification, application and authorisation are written as separate words throughout the purchasing record.

How should ratings data be purchased and integrated?

The methodology and regulatory materials reinforce the need to preserve source meaning rather than reduce every output to one generic ESG field method method proposed governance approach.

Licence

Clarify permitted use and export.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

Alderwick’s original pilot imports two clearly labelled assessment records, then changes one source date and one entity identifier to test whether the platform flags a mismatch.

The buyer asks what data it may retain, share and export under the actual contract rather than assuming that a subscription grants unrestricted reuse.

The implementation supplier must preserve the provider name, method basis, scale direction and assessment date in the export.

The analyst remains responsible for interpreting the output for the committee’s decision, while the technical team owns accurate transmission and identification.

The software RFP helps turn those requirements into acceptance questions without inventing a provider’s licence terms.

What should the data-feed pilot test?

Change an identifier and a source date to test whether the data feed preserves meaning.

The export should retain the information needed to reconstruct the committee’s interpretation.

The pilot does not compare vendor accuracy or calculate an investment recommendation.

It tests whether the system preserves the information needed for a competent user to interpret the assessment.

Describe

Name the assessment and basis.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

Alderwick’s final fictional paper explains why the two company methods can differ, why the property assessment is a separate object and which source questions remain unresolved.

The committee receives a supported interpretation rather than a combined rank or a claim that a favourable rating proves every environmental and social outcome.

The ESG governance guide helps assign review responsibility, while the scheme-specific guides retain their own assessment and evidence workflows.

If an adviser is engaged, the brief should specify methodology interpretation, data reconciliation or regulatory review separately from buying the data feed.

The useful outcome is a decision-maker who understands the evidence and its limits, not a spreadsheet that treats every rating label as the same measurement.

How can the team put this into practice?

This nine-step editorial workflow is a suggested sequence for the fictional case, rather than an additional regulatory timetable.

Frequently asked

Questions people ask

Are all ESG ratings comparable?

No, method, scope and scale direction can differ, as the MSCI and Sustainalytics descriptions illustrate.

Does a higher score always mean better?

No, Sustainalytics describes unmanaged risk with lower scores representing less unmanaged risk.

Is an industry-relative rating an absolute impact score?

MSCI describes its rating relative to industry peers, so that is the interpretation to preserve.

Are UK ratings providers already covered by the full new regime?

The made Order specifies substantive commencement on 29 June 2028, distinct from enabling provisions.

Does ESMA notification mean authorisation?

The cited Article 51 document is a notification list and should not be relabelled an authorisation decision.

What should an investment-team export retain?

Keep the assessed object, provider, method, scale meaning, date and source reference needed to reconstruct the interpretation.
