Standards and reporting

ESG Standards

Choosing ESG standards means identifying the basis for a particular output, the reason it applies and the claim the completed work can support.

What does choosing an ESG standard decide?

A reporting basis determines the information purpose, requirements and conditions for a claim, so choosing one should be more precise than selecting an ESG label UK SRS S1, objective and compliance GRI 1, purpose and section 3.

Define the basisRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Purpose

Who needs which information?

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The practical task is to identify the document governing a particular output and the reason that document applies to the organisation.

A law, a disclosure standard, an industry resource, a questionnaire and a certification arrangement can all influence the work while serving different functions.

Keep those functions in the project record rather than describing every sustainability document as a mandatory ESG standard.

The frameworks comparison provides the broader landscape, while this guide explains how to control the basis and claim for a specific reporting task.

What should the reporting-basis record contain?

This editorial record identifies the authority and output before detailed data collection begins.

Editorial record fields rather than a prescribed standards-selection form.
Evidence questionReview approachWhat to avoid
OutputA named report, response or statementA general ESG programme with no reporting destination
BasisExact document, edition and relevant provisionsA framework logo
ApplicabilityRule, voluntary decision or recipient requestAssuming every UK organisation is in scope
ClaimProposed statement and conditionsA broad compliance phrase without a basis

How does a published standard differ from a legal duty?

UK SRS are available for voluntary use, while legal or regulatory reporting obligations require their own applicability analysis DBT UK SRS guidance.

Find the authorityRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Publication

The standard text exists.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

A publication date does not establish that every organisation must report against the document from that date.

IFRS S1 and S 2 contain international standard requirements, while UK SRS are separate UK-issued texts with their own context IFRS S1, objective and scope IFRS S2, objective and scope UK SRS S1, introductory notice.

For a real reporting project, retain the rule or decision that makes the chosen basis relevant and identify the entity and period concerned.

This avoids a procurement team treating a voluntary internal goal as a statutory duty or a mandatory filing as merely a preferred communication format.

Which status distinctions matter?

These editorial status checks prevent one document’s authority from being transferred to another.

Use the applicable owner text rather than a generic description of ESG regulation.
Evidence questionReview approachWhat to avoid
Issued textIdentify the final published requirementsCalling consultation wording final
Jurisdictional ruleRead its entity and period conditionsUsing the standard’s publication date as commencement
Voluntary adoptionRecord what the organisation chose to produceImplying that the choice binds every company
Recipient requestConfirm what the requesting party needsDescribing a customer question as national law

Does the same evidence answer every materiality test?

UK SRS S1 focuses on financially relevant information, GRI on significant impacts and ESRS on both dimensions, so evidence reuse does not make their conclusions identical UK SRS S1, objective and paragraphs 17–19 GRI 1, key concepts Revised ESRS 1, paragraph 35.

Keep the questionRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Input

Retain the original evidence.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

An original fictional engineering partnership receives one request about its impact on affected workers and another about a dependency that could affect contract delivery.

The team keeps the questions separate even where they draw on the same operational records, because one answer is not automatically a substitute for the other.

A common ESG dataset can reduce repeated collection, but the reporting team still needs to understand why information is included and what it is intended to explain.

Use impact materiality and financial materiality assessment for the different judgements rather than inventing a combined universal materiality score.

How should the fictional partnership map its requests?

This fictional editorial map explains reporting purpose without reproducing a framework-by-framework directory.

Original fictional comparison of reporting tasks, not an assessment of a real partnership.
Evidence questionReview approachWhat to avoid
Affected-worker questionIdentify relevant impacts and how they are managedReplace the answer with a financial-risk score
Investor informationExplain relevant risks, opportunities and effectsAssume a popular social issue is automatically financially material
Climate disclosureReview the chosen climate requirementsTreat an inventory as the complete climate report
Requested questionnaireAnswer the recipient’s defined questionClaim that completing it establishes every standard

What role do industry resources and aligned questionnaires play?

SASB Standards provide industry-based disclosure resources, while CDP describes IFRS S2 alignment for its climate questionnaire, and each resource still needs its own appropriate use IFRS Foundation, SASB Standards CDP framework alignment.

Use the right resourceRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Industry

Find relevant industry information.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

A resource can help the team identify useful information without replacing the reporting standard that governs the final output.

For IFRS S1, the source-of-guidance requirements concerning SASB need to be distinguished from the optional wording in the UK text rather than assumed identical IFRS S1, paragraphs 55 and 58 UK SRS S1, paragraphs 55 and 58.

The fictional partnership records why it consulted an industry resource and which resulting information was relevant to its own circumstances.

Read SASB Standards or CDP reporting for those specific tasks instead of expanding a standards-selection project into unrelated questionnaires.

How can coverage claims be tested?

This editorial review checks whether a resource supports the work actually claimed.

For climate detail, UK SRS S2 has its own strategy, risk-management and metrics requirements UK SRS S2, core content.
Evidence questionReview approachWhat to avoid
Industry resourceIdentify the relevant industry and informationA list copied from an unrelated business model
Climate standardReview strategy, risks, metrics and connectionsAn emissions number labelled full climate compliance
Questionnaire alignmentMap the actual answers and requirementsAlignment presented as blanket equivalence
Evidence reuseKeep the common record and distinct outputsA single answer overwritten for every recipient

How should editions and transitional rules be controlled?

Revised ESRS applies from financial years beginning 1 January 2027 with specified 2026 choices, illustrating why edition selection needs the application provisions rather than a headline date Regulation 2026/1563, Articles 2–3.

Record the editionRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Text

Use the exact issued document.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The fictional partnership’s review file stores the source version, relevant reporting period and any transition decision next to the planned output.

It does not change a standard’s name on the front page while leaving the prior edition’s paragraph references and assumptions inside the working file.

IFRS S2’s 2025 issued text includes amendments with their own application provisions, so an international standard’s current publication should not be confused with automatic mandatory application of every amendment today IFRS S2, AppendixC.

An editorial version register helps the next reviewer identify a deliberate choice rather than guessing from the most recent downloaded PDF.

What should a version-change note explain?

These editorial checks make the effect of a changed source reviewable.

Editorial version-control questions rather than a mandatory form.
Evidence questionReview approachWhat to avoid
Source changeWhich document or provision changed?A silent library replacement
ApplicationWhich output and period are affected?Assuming every open project must switch immediately
Work impactWhich definitions, calculations or disclosures need review?Only updating the bibliography
DecisionWho accepted the version and transition treatment?A product update mistaken for management approval

What can compliance, certification and assurance mean?

GRI 1 and UK SRS S1 set conditions for reporting claims, while ISO distinguishes certification and accreditation and does not itself certify organisations GRI 1, section 3 UK SRS S1, paragraphs 72–73A ISO, certification.

Name the claimRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Reporting

Meet the conditions for the stated reporting basis.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The fictional partnership cannot turn a management-system certificate into proof that its whole sustainability report complies with a disclosure standard.

A software framework label, completed checklist or consultant review likewise needs to be described according to the work actually performed.

If the proposed wording says in accordance, compliant or certified, ask which owner’s requirements support that exact phrase and what evidence demonstrates them.

Read sustainability certifications for certificate scope, while keeping that decision separate from the reporting-basis review.

Which wording should trigger a review?

This editorial claim check separates supported statements from broader implications.

Editorial wording tests; the actual basis and engagement determine what can be claimed.
Evidence questionReview approachWhat to avoid
We used the standardWhich parts and for what output?Assuming use establishes compliance
Our report compliesHave all relevant claim conditions been checked?Treating a partial mapping as sufficient
We hold certificationWhich body, activity and valid scope?A certificate described as whole-company sustainability
Our data is assuredWhich information and conclusion?A review meeting described as independent assurance

What should software or a consultant hand over?

An editorial standards handover should preserve the governing basis, version decisions, evidence map and unresolved gaps rather than only a completed dashboard.

Keep the basis portableRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Authority

Retain the source and applicability decision.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

For the fictional partnership, the handover includes the two distinct reporting requests, the materiality reasoning and the basis for every proposed public claim.

The next reviewer should be able to follow the source and decision without access to the original workshop or a particular product administrator.

A sustainability-software brief can test source/version exports, while a consultancy brief can ask for explicit scope and acceptance criteria.

Return to the standards hub when a new request changes the output, because a reused dataset does not decide the organisation’s reporting obligations.

The ESG questionnaire guide turns a broad information request into defined answers, supporting records and unresolved questions.

The ESRS and ISSB interoperability guide helps retain framework-specific judgements when information is mapped or reused.

Use the IFRS sustainability reporting software guide to test source versions, disclosure evidence and the S1/S2 reporting workflow.

How can the reporting basis be chosen and controlled?

This is an editorial preparation sequence rather than a prescribed assessment method or a conformity checklist.

    Assign the gaps

Name owners for missing evidence and unresolved interpretation.
  9. 909

    Preserve the handover

Keep the basis and decision record usable for future reviewers.

Frequently asked

Questions people ask

Is there one universal ESG standard?

The relevant basis depends on the output and context, because UK SRS financial information, GRI impacts and ESRS double materiality have different reporting purposes.

Does a published standard automatically apply to every company?

No, UK SRS guidance makes the standards available for voluntary use and any applicable legal or regulatory requirement needs a separate scope assessment.

Are SASB Standards the same as a reporting mandate?

They are industry-based resources whose required or optional use depends on the governing reporting basis, including different IFRS S1 and UK SRS S1 wording.

Does CDP alignment prove IFRS S2 compliance?

No, the actual disclosure needs to be considered against IFRS S2’s own requirements.

Does ISO certify sustainability reports?

ISO itself does not perform certification, and any certificate needs its own scope rather than being treated as reporting compliance.

What belongs in a standards register?

An editorial register can retain output, authority, edition, application period, materiality basis, evidence, gaps and the proposed claim with its review decision.
