Standards and reporting

ESRS E4 biodiversity

ESRS E4 concerns biodiversity and ecosystems, so a useful evidence file distinguishes location, ecological change, business dependence and the claim being made.

What does ESRS E4 cover?

E4 addresses biodiversity and ecosystem change, species, ecosystem condition and extent, and ecosystem services ESRS E4 paragraph 6.

Explain natureRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Pressure

Describe the relevant activity and matter.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The ESRS overview places E4 within the reporting architecture.

A carbon inventory alone does not explain these biodiversity and ecosystem questions.

The selected information should answer a material matter rather than decorate a report with a nature photograph.

Which E4 requirements should the source file name?

Use the reporting version actually selected because revised ESRS applies from FY2027 with specified FY2026 choices Articles 2–3.

Editorial version-control record.
RecordUseful evidenceReview question
InstrumentPublished standard and reporting year. Are the paragraph references appropriate?
Historical basisEarlier report and its edition. Is an old answer being relabelled?
Revised structureE4 through E4-5.Is a removed older requirement being assumed?
ScopeSeparate legal-route record.Has content been mistaken for who reports?
Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The revised standard does not retain the original E4-6 anticipated-financial-effects requirement ESRS E4 contents Original ESRS E4.

The CSRD thresholds guide handles the separate reporting population under the directive Directive 2026/470.

Why must the nature matter be described first?

Identify the material impact, risk or opportunity and then select the material information rather than starting with a convenient indicator ESRS 1 paragraphs 25–30.

Matter before metricRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Impact

What effect on nature needs assessment?

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The two perspectives should not be collapsed into a rule that both must be material.

Historical IG1 offers non-authoritative support for the 2023 standards rather than revised paragraph authority IG1 disclaimer EFRAG guidance status.

The materiality assessment guide develops the decision record.

What location information makes evidence usable?

A useful nature record connects evidence to the activity and place it actually describes rather than presenting a generic group-wide claim.

Editorial evidence fields, not a prescribed ecological survey protocol.
RecordUseful evidenceReview question
ActivityThe operation or relationship under review. What could create or depend on the matter?
LocationA meaningful geographic description.Does the evidence refer to this place?
ObservationSource, date and method. What was actually observed?
LimitationCoverage or interpretation uncertainty.Could the reader infer a broader result?
Read the detailed guidance and evidence

A site label without source context may be insufficient to explain a nature statement.

Retain the distinction between direct observation, an estimate and contextual information used to understand the matter.

What does the fictional restoration case show?

The invented Linden Estates case separates a funded habitat action from evidence that an ecological outcome has occurred.

Action versus outcomeRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Commitment

A restoration area and action plan are approved.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

Linden is fictional and no real company, project result or regulatory biodiversity assessment is implied.

The review question is whether the words restored biodiversity describe the evidence or go beyond it.

No invented ecological metric or legal restoration threshold is assigned to the case.

What would the fictional reviewer inspect?

Trace each statement to the evidence supporting that particular stage rather than treating expenditure as proof of ecosystem recovery.

Original fictional narrative review rather than an assurance conclusion.
RecordUseful evidenceReview question
FundingApproved budget and purpose.Does approval mean implementation?
Work completedRecorded activity and coverage. What was done and where?
MonitoringObservation date, method and limits.Does the evidence demonstrate the stated change?
Public wordingThe proposed outcome claim.Should it describe activity rather than recovery?
Read the detailed guidance and evidence

Linden’s reviewer retains the positive action while narrowing an unsupported outcome statement.

The reporting principles guide develops balanced and verifiable explanation.

How should policies, plans and actions connect?

Explain the relevant response to the material matter using the general disclosure framework rather than assuming the existence of a policy answers every question ESRS 1 paragraph 29 and ESRS 2 GDR requirements.

Link the responseRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Commitment

Identify scope and responsibility.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

A programme description should distinguish what is approved, what has happened and what remains uncertain.

The evidence file should preserve the connection between the stated aim and the measure used to discuss progress.

Management’s reporting judgement remains visible even when the same source document supports several answers.

How should impacts and dependencies remain distinct?

A business dependency and an effect on nature can be related without being the same assessment conclusion.

Editorial distinction supporting the applicable materiality assessment.
RecordUseful evidenceReview question
DependencyA resource or ecosystem service the business uses. How could a change affect prospects?
ImpactAn effect associated with the relevant activity. What evidence supports the impact assessment?
ResponseAn action intended to address the matter. Is its effect demonstrated or expected?
InformationThe selected explanation. Why is this answer material?
Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The financial materiality guide develops the dependency pathway.

Do not treat a proposed benefit as proof that a negative impact has disappeared or that a financial risk has been resolved.

How does biodiversity connect with water information?

E3 addresses water use while E4 addresses biodiversity and ecosystems, so a shared location can require different evidence questions Revised E4 scope Revised E3 scope.

Shared place, distinct questionsRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Water use

What resource quantity or activity is relevant?

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The ESRS E3 guide develops the water-use file rather than assuming a water figure proves an ecological condition.

A common map can support navigation while the assessment retains the separate matters and their sources.

What should a biodiversity information register contain?

Use supporting lists to locate information while keeping the undertaking’s own materiality decisions and evidence visible Explanatory note, paragraph 1.

Editorial register rather than an official metric inventory.
RecordUseful evidenceReview question
ReferenceApplicable requirement and version. Is this the right question?
SourceLocation, date and observation method. What does the evidence cover?
JudgementMateriality, limitations and claim review. Why was this answer selected?
OutputReviewed wording and report location.Does publication match the file?
Read the detailed guidance and evidence

EFRAG’s draft list is supporting navigation material and not the company’s automatic reporting checklist Draft list release.

The ESRS datapoints guide explains why an evidence record is more than a populated row.

Can the map distinguish work done from recovery observed?

A useful demonstration retains the location and source limitations behind a nature claim rather than only displaying a coloured map.

Trace the monitoringRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Location

Retain the place and scope of the actual habitat work rather than only a group-level marker.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

The draft XBRL taxonomy represents disclosures technically and does not make tagging mandatory at this stage EFRAG taxonomy release.

A mapped location or valid technical field does not establish that ecological recovery has been demonstrated.

Use the fictional Linden case to challenge the difference between a project milestone and an outcome.

Linden’s fictional map export should identify completed work separately from monitoring evidence so a project milestone cannot silently become a claim of ecosystem recovery.

What should the biodiversity handover preserve?

The next reviewer should be able to identify the matter, source evidence and claim decision without reconstructing the project from presentations.

Original editorial acceptance checklist.
RecordUseful evidenceReview question
MatterImpact, dependency, risk or opportunity. What is being explained?
Outcome interpretationCompleted work, observation and limitation linked. What supports the word recovery in the proposed statement?
ReviewUncertainty and approved interpretation. What is still unresolved?
PublicationFinal wording and source trail. What claim was actually made?
Read the detailed guidance and evidence

Ask CSRD consultants and reporting software suppliers to demonstrate those distinctions.

The standards homepage compares other reporting bases before the same nature evidence is reused.

What is the useful first reporting output?

Start with a supported statement about the material nature matter and a record of what remains to be established.

Support one statementRequirements and evidence

Module 01 / 03

Question

Name the matter and reporting basis.

Read the detailed guidance and evidence

Linden’s fictional file records completed work and monitoring limitations rather than asserting recovery without evidence.

That narrow, reviewable answer is a stronger starting point than a broad claim whose source cannot be found.

The TNFD software guide tests location, nature-related evidence and explanation without treating a map or score as a reporting conclusion.

How can a team prepare the E4 file?

This editorial nine-step process organises evidence without prescribing an ecological assessment method.

  1. 101

    Fix the version

Record the reporting year and basis.
  2. 202

    Describe the matter

    Separate impacts and dependencies.
  3. 303

    Map the context

    Identify the activity and location.
  4. 404

    Locate evidence

    Retain source, date and method.
  5. 505

    Connect responses

    Distinguish commitments and completed actions.
  6. 606

    Review outcomes

    Assess what monitoring actually supports.
  7. 707

    Select information

    Retain materiality and claim reasons.
  8. 808

    Challenge wording

    Narrow unsupported conclusions.
  9. 909

    Hand over

Keep sources, decisions and publication references.

Frequently asked

Questions people ask

Is E4 a carbon standard?

E4 concerns biodiversity and ecosystems rather than substituting for climate reporting.

Does every nature topic need all data?

The relevant material topic or sub-topic and material information determine the reporting selection.

Does revised E4 retain E4-6?

The revised standard ends at E4-5 rather than retaining the original topical anticipated-financial-effects requirement.

Does a funded action prove ecosystem recovery?

Funding, implementation and observed outcome are different evidence questions and the wording should reflect what is supported.

Can a map decide materiality?

A map can organise locations but cannot replace the applicable assessment and information-selection judgements.

Does a completed list prove compliance?

No: supporting material cannot replace the standard or be used as an automatic checklist.
