Standards and reporting
ESRS datapoints
An ESRS datapoint is a distinct piece of required information within a disclosure requirement, rather than a universal spreadsheet cell every company must complete.
What is an ESRS datapoint?
A disclosure requirement contains distinct datapoints, which can be narrative, semi-narrative or numerical information ESRS 1 paragraph 17 EFRAG explanatory note, paragraphs 19–32.
Module 01 / 03
Requirement
Identify the disclosure objective and applicable paragraph.
Module 02 / 03
Datapoint
Identify the separable information described by the standard.
Module 03 / 03
Reported fact
Add the company-specific answer, context and evidence.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
A requirement to describe a method and a requirement to disclose a quantity are different types of information, even if a workbook presents each as one row.
The sustainability reporting standards homepage provides the wider framework map, while ESRS explains this particular family of standards.
The double-materiality assessment template provides a working register for separate impact and financial judgements.
The ESG data collection guide sets out a practical dictionary, ownership workflow and evidence register for reporting inputs.
Which datapoints resource should you use?
Choose the supporting resource that matches the reporting standard, because historical IG3 relates to the 2023 ESRS and the revised list is a separate 2026 draft resource EFRAG implementation guidance 2026 draft list release.
| Resource | Purpose | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 ESRS and original IG3 | Original standard and non-authoritative implementation support. | Do not carry its references unchanged into revised reports. |
| Revised 2026 ESRS | Published requirements, entering force 10 November 2026 and applying from FY2027. | Check specified FY2026 options and disclose the chosen version. |
| 2026 draft datapoints list | Human-readable supporting list and version mapping. | It is not a substitute for the standard or implementation guidance. |
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
Keep the actual instrument, resource edition and source-read date in your project file, rather than labelling every spreadsheet simply ESRS Regulation 2026/1563, Articles 2–3.
How many ESRS datapoints must you report?
There is no universal company report count, because materiality, conditions, reliefs, entity-specific disclosures and disaggregation affect the information reported EFRAG explanatory note, paragraphs 67–71.
Module 01 / 03
List total
Check which standard, edition and counting method a number describes.
Module 02 / 03
Company selection
Apply materiality and the relevant conditions before collecting answers.
Module 03 / 03
Report facts
One datapoint may appear across multiple periods or reporting contexts.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
EFRAG’s statistics distinguish general disclosure requirement references and technical basis-of-preparation information, so a headline count without its exclusions is misleading EFRAG explanatory note, paragraph 67.
Do not combine reduction percentages calculated on different bases or claim that a list total equals the number of facts every undertaking publishes.
Should you complete every workbook row?
No: the revised draft list expressly warns against using it as a checklist and requires judgement about materiality EFRAG explanatory note, paragraph 1.
| Decision | Question | Record |
|---|---|---|
| Topic selection | Does the topic relate to material impacts, risks or opportunities? | Link to the materiality conclusion. |
| Information selection | Is this particular information material? | Record the reason for inclusion or omission. |
| Supplementary information | Is additional information presented under the permitted supplementary framework? | Keep its purpose and presentation clear. |
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
Revised ESRS 1 paragraph 24 says immaterial prescribed information shall not be disclosed, subject to the supplementary-information exception in section 8.2 ESRS 1 paragraphs 24–30.
Use the double materiality assessment guide before launching a department-wide data request.
What does a datapoint’s data type tell you?
EFRAG distinguishes narrative, semi-narrative and numerical information, so a blank text field is not equivalent to a numerical zero EFRAG explanatory note, paragraph 32.
Module 01 / 03
Narrative
Ask for an explanation with its boundary and assumptions.
Module 02 / 03
Semi-narrative
Preserve the meaning of a Boolean or permitted enumeration.
Module 03 / 03
Numerical
Retain the value, unit, period and calculation context.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
In a fictional Alder Components register, a transition-plan absence statement is a narrative disclosure rather than a failed attempt to enter zero tonnes.
For a quantity, the reviewer needs both the number and its context, because copying an unlabelled value into a report destroys the link with the source calculation.
How should zero, blank and not applicable differ?
Use explicit editorial workflow statuses so reviewers can distinguish an answer from an unresolved request, while applying the actual requirement and its conditions EFRAG explanatory note, paragraphs 1–4.
| Status | Meaning in this fictional workflow | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Zero | A measured or calculated result is zero. | Method and source records support the result. |
| Not applicable | A stated condition does not apply. | The condition and rationale are recorded. |
| Not material | The information is excluded after judgement. | Materiality reference and reviewer decision. |
| Missing | The requested information is unresolved. | Named owner, reason and next action. |
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
A blank cell is not evidence that a condition is absent, and a not-applicable label must not replace an uncomfortable missing-data problem.
Which context makes a metric reviewable?
A metric needs its measurement approach and relevant context alongside the value, rather than a disconnected numerical result ESRS 2 GDR-M paragraphs 48–49.
Module 01 / 03
Boundary
Identify entities, activities and any relevant value-chain coverage.
Module 02 / 03
Period and units
Record reporting period, unit and conversion logic.
Module 03 / 03
Method
Retain inputs, assumptions, uncertainty and changes.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
Alder’s fictional electricity record links FY2027 consumption to meter batch M17 and factor register F4, with review sign-off and report location 7.3.
The example uses an invented register ID, ALD-E1-30-a-ii-LB, which is not an official EFRAG datapoint identifier.
Sustainability data management software should demonstrate that evidence path rather than merely exporting a populated spreadsheet.
How do conditions and reliefs affect a gap analysis?
A conditional requirement, a materiality judgement and an available transitional relief are different decisions and need different explanations ESRS 1 paragraphs 24–31 and 125–127.
| Decision | Example | Review control |
|---|---|---|
| Condition | A disclosure depends on the relevant activity or circumstance. | Retain the precise condition and supporting facts. |
| Materiality | The information is not material. | Retain the information-materiality judgement. |
| Transitional relief | A qualifying reporter omits specified information for a permitted period. | Identify the provision, year and surviving disclosure. |
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
For E1 financial effects, the phase-in provisions preserve the specified asset-risk information in paragraphs 39(a)(b) and 40(a)(b), so an entire E1-11 worksheet cannot simply be marked deferred ESRS 1 paragraphs 125–127.
Why do policies and targets recur across topics?
The general disclosure requirements organise information about policies, actions, metrics and targets, with topical standards adding relevant specifications ESRS 2 GDR-P, GDR-A, GDR-M and GDR-T.
Module 01 / 03
Policy scope
Identify which material matters and operations a policy covers.
Module 02 / 03
Delivery evidence
Connect actions with resources and intended results.
Module 03 / 03
Metric and target
Keep baseline, coverage, method and progress traceable.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
In the fictional register, one approved policy document can support several mapped disclosures without creating three inconsistent copies of the underlying policy.
Reusing evidence does not remove the need to answer the distinct information required for each material matter.
How does one requirement become several records?
Revised E1-8 requires both location-based and market-based Scope 2 information, illustrating why one broad requirement cannot be reduced to one universal number ESRS E1 paragraph 30(a)(ii).
| Fictional record | Evidence link | Review question |
|---|---|---|
| Location-based Scope 2 | Meter batch M17 and factor register F4. | Does the calculation follow the selected period and boundary? |
| Market-based Scope 2 | Same activity population and relevant contractual evidence. | Do instruments meet the applicable quality criteria? |
| Inventory method narrative | Boundary decision and calculation-method note. | Can a reader understand the resulting values? |
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
The Scope 2 guide explains the two methods, while the original GHG Protocol sources support the underlying accounting approach Corporate Standard Scope 2 Guidance.
A Scope 3 inventory adds category-screening decisions rather than just another copy of the electricity worksheet Scope 3 Standard.
Is the XBRL taxonomy the datapoints list?
The draft list helps human users navigate requirements, while the draft XBRL taxonomy provides machine-readable concepts and additional technical attributes EFRAG taxonomy release, 17 September 2026.
Module 01 / 03
Human review
Use the workbook to navigate information and evidence.
Module 02 / 03
Digital structure
Use the relevant taxonomy version for technical representation.
Module 03 / 03
Reporting judgement
Preserve materiality, conditions and source evidence outside a simple validation result.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
EFRAG states that digital tagging is not yet mandatory because the regulatory framework remains to be established by ESMA and the Commission EFRAG taxonomy release.
The ESRS digital taxonomy is also different from the EU environmental Taxonomy, and the voluntary standard’s Annex II value-chain cap is a separate instrument rather than another datapoints workbook Regulation 2026/1560, Article 3 and Annex II.
How should you migrate an older IG3 register?
Compare the original and revised requirements rather than assuming old and new workbook rows map one-to-one 2026 draft list release.
| Migration step | Check | Retain |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze the earlier basis | Identify the standard and supporting workbook used. | Historical references and report locations. |
| Map the new requirement | Review changed wording, conditions and structure. | New paragraph reference and mapping rationale. |
| Reassess evidence | Check whether existing information answers the revised requirement. | Revised owner, method and reviewer decision. |
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
For example, revised E1-8 is the gross-emissions requirement, whereas the original ESRS located emissions in E1-6 Original ESRS E1 Revised E1 rendering.
The joint 2024 interoperability guidance can inform a dated comparison with ISSB disclosures but should not be treated as a fresh mapping of revised ESRS Joint interoperability guidance.
Reporting scope and the content standard are separate questions, so do not infer a company’s statutory obligations merely from possessing a workbook Directive 2026/470.
What should the final evidence handover include?
A useful handover identifies each selected disclosure, its reporting decision, source evidence, review status and publication location.
Module 01 / 04
Requirement
Instrument version, paragraph and information selected.
Module 02 / 04
Evidence
Owner, source record, method and any limitations.
Module 03 / 04
Decision
Materiality, condition or relief rationale with reviewer.
Module 04 / 04
Publication
The reviewed result and final location in the statement.
Read the detailed guidance and evidence
Alder’s fictional market-based record remains open until contractual evidence has been reviewed, even though the location-based calculation is ready.
The CSRD software guide and CSRD consultancy guide help turn this distinction into a demonstration and handover brief.
Completing a register helps organise reporting work but does not itself establish compliance or replace professional judgement EFRAG explanatory note, paragraph 1.
How can a team build a usable register?
This editorial nine-step sequence produces a reviewable evidence file rather than a claim that every workbook row must be completed.

Frequently asked
Questions people ask
Is there one official number every company must report?
No: list totals do not equal a company’s reported facts, and materiality, conditions and disaggregation affect reporting.
Is IG3 the current revised-ESRS workbook?
The original IG3 relates to the 2023 ESRS, while EFRAG issued a separate draft list for revised ESRS in August 2026.
Is the 2026 datapoints list law?
No: EFRAG identifies it as non-authoritative supporting material that cannot replace the revised standards.
Does every datapoint need a number?
No: datapoints include narrative and semi-narrative information as well as numerical information.
Is ESRS XBRL tagging already mandatory?
EFRAG’s September 2026 release states that digital tagging is not yet mandatory and that the regulatory framework remains to be established.
Can a completed workbook prove compliance?
No: the draft list expressly must not be used as a checklist and must be used with judgement about materiality.
